Snapmaker U1: A tool-changing, Multi-Color, High-Speed 3D Printer

Snapmaker, known for its versatile 3-in-1 desktop fabrication tools, has officially unveiled its latest innovation: the Snapmaker U1 3D printer. After weeks of speculation fueled by leaked images, the company has confirmed it’s returning to Kickstarter – the platform that launched its initial successes – to introduce this groundbreaking tool-changing, multi-color, and multi-material device.
The Snapmaker U1 is poised to redefine desktop 3D printing with a focus on speed, efficiency, and vibrant multi-color capabilities. Built on a robust CoreXY motion system, the U1 promises high-speed operation, boasting a maximum printing speed of 300 mm/s with acceleration up to 20,000 mm/s², and a maximum travel speed of 500 mm/s.
But the real star of the show is Snapmaker’s innovative SnapSwap intelligent tool-changing system. This proprietary technology is designed to dramatically reduce filament waste and speed up material changes. Unlike traditional multi-color systems that require extensive purging of filament when switching colors, the U1 utilizes dedicated print heads for different materials or colors, allowing for tool swaps in a mere 5 seconds. Snapmaker claims this efficiency can lead to up to 5 times faster multi-color prints and an impressive 80% reduction in filament waste.
This means makers can now effortlessly combine vibrant aesthetics, flexible parts, and functional supports within a single print job, without the frustrating wait times and material loss associated with other multi-color methods. The U1 is equipped with four swappable hotend modules that remain stationary until engaged by the main print head, ensuring precise alignment with an offset held under 0.04mm.
The Snapmaker U1 is designed for “every type of maker,” from home hobbyists eager to explore the world of multi-color printing to professionals undertaking complex DIY projects. Its fully enclosed chamber is ideal for printing with temperature-sensitive materials, while features like automatic mesh bed leveling and advanced compensation algorithms for input shaping and pressure advance ensure high-quality, dimensionally accurate prints.
While full specifications and pricing will be revealed during the Kickstarter campaign, some details have already emerged:
- Motion System: CoreXY for speed, precision, and stability.
- Tool-Changing: SnapSwap™ system for 5-second tool swaps and reduced filament waste.
- Multi-Material/Multi-Color: Four dedicated toolheads for diverse printing possibilities.
- Build Volume: Approximately 270 x 270 x 270mm, slightly larger than some popular enclosed desktop printers.
- Enclosed Design: For stable temperature control and compatibility with various filaments.
- Filament Compatibility: Supports 1.75mm third-party filaments, though RFID recognition will only work with Snapmaker’s own.
- User Interface: Features a color touchscreen for intuitive control.
Snapmaker’s decision to return to Kickstarter for the U1 launch highlights their commitment to the community that has supported their journey since the highly successful Snapmaker Original and Snapmaker 2.0 campaigns. This move allows them to reconnect with their roots and gather valuable feedback directly from the maker community.
As the Snapmaker U1 enters its final production stages, anticipation is building for its official Kickstarter debut. With its promise of unprecedented speed, minimal waste, and seamless multi-color printing, the U1 seems poised to be a significant player in the evolving landscape of desktop 3D printing.
